Animals and Fishing
In the Sky: Dozens of species of birds inhabit our wooded property. Be sure to keep an eye out for the Farm's Bobolinks. Rarely seen in other parts of Connecticut, our Bobolinks nest in the cow pastures at the entry to the Farm's east side trails. Print out our list of birds and take it along while you hike. Kids will love the challenge of seeing how many they can spot and checking them off as they go. In the Pastures: Meet Patches, a Jacob’s sheep, just one of our flock of wool-producing animals. Cows, rabbits, ducks and chickens keep Patches company in our pastures and barn, and can be seen most days. In the Water: Sparkling Salmon Brook wends its way through Holcomb Farm, filled with fish and other aquatic life. Fishing enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to angle for trout or catfish. Our vernal pool is a safe place for amphibians lay their eggs in spring. In fact, endangered Blue Spotted Salamanders rely on our pool for their survival. If you'd like to visit this portion of our property, please contact Linda from the Farm first, at lknorr@holcombfarm.org. In our Nature Center: A skunk and a python are just a few of the animals that live on our grounds (safely behind glass, of course) and can be visited from Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Baby painted turtle discovered in our pond on May 1, 2008 during a high school science program.
